Our guest
facilities are newly built or renovated with radiant floor
heating, red oak & slate floors and wrap around balconies with
views both ways of the Selkirk and Monashee mountains. The
bedrooms feature rustic, locally hand-made king size beds,
European style bathrooms with thermostatic rain showers and
heated towel rails.
Our aim from the outset was to run
our B&B in the most environmentally friendly way possible. When
building our extension we used minimal concrete, built with wood
sourced locally, used local labour and suppliers. Large
overhangs on the roof and blinds on the windows provide shade
from the summer sun so that we don’t use any energy-hungry
air-conditioning.
We installed dual flush toilets
and connected a ‘grey water’ system.
We installed an extremely
efficient radiant floor heating system (Warmboard) and
excessively insulated all the walls, floors and ceilings. The
Pella windows are tripled glazed with Low-E insulating glass.
We used water based and low
toxicity internal wood finishes.
We installed a highly efficient
external wood burning furnace that heats all our hot water and
supplies heating for the house. We burn waste cedar from a local
cedar mill. Provided the wood is dried and seasoned properly
this system is almost carbon neutral.
Our drinking water is from a bore
fed by a natural spring 91m I 300ft below ground.
In cleaning we use environmentally
friendly cleaning products wherever possible (chemical free
products) and do not use anti-bacterial soaps (anti-bacterial
soaps are responsible for destroying vast amounts of naturally
occurring water micro-organisms at the bottom of the food
chain). We line-dry our linens when weather permits.
Although it is impossible to be
completely ‘green’ we try and recycle, reduce and re-use as much
as we can. We always use our own shopping bags, buy local
produce, and have our own free-range meat chickens, turkeys and
eggs.
In the future we would like to
explore installing solar panels on our barn roof but currently
it is not cost effective.
